Competencies
In this seventh session of DC Advocacy Partners, participants will:
- Understand accessible and affordable housing options including Sections 8 and 811
- Recognize the protections under the Fair Housing Act
- Begin to explain what advance preparations may be needed before an emergency happens
- Be able to summarize the role of Independent Living Centers
- Identify the principles of independent living
- Be able to describe disability rights and responsibilities related to public transportation
- Recognize what gains have been made in public transportation for individuals with disabilities
- Identify which DC and Federal agencies address issues related to disability discrimination in several of the “connecting activity” areas.
Skill sets
Partners will:
- Model how to make an effective complaint to an agency or organization around a specific issue in a professional manner
- Continue to polish their oral testimony skills
- Apply knowledge of effective oral testimonies in order to critique their own testimonies and testimonies of their peers
